Japan’s Hardest Train Ticket? Saphir Odoriko Booking Guide! 🌊💎

Hello everyone~ It’s Hattie 💛 Today I am taking you along on one of the most aesthetic, picture-perfect railway journeys in all of Japan—the legendary Saphir Odoriko (サフィール踊り子)! If you have been scrolling through Instagram or TikTok planning your dream trip to Japan, chances are you’ve seen this breathtaking sapphire-blue luxury train gliding right along the sparkling coast of the Izu Peninsula.

I have a quick confession to make… we totally messed up our timing and tried to book our tickets way too late 😭. The ultra-exclusive Premium Green Car in Car 1—which only has 20 VIP seats in the entire train—was completely sold out. I had major FOMO at first! But we managed to grab seats in the Standard Green Car, and let me tell you, the second I stepped on board, all my sadness evaporated. The arching skylights, the sun-drenched aesthetic, the deep blue Pacific ocean views… it was worth every single penny!

Whether you are planning a romantic weekend getaway or a fun coastal day trip from Tokyo, here is my honest review, interior tour, and fail-proof booking hacks so you can experience this gorgeous train hassle-free! 🌊✨

Setting Off: Shinagawa Station to Izu

We stayed near Shinagawa Station the night before our trip, which turned out to be a total game-changer because the Saphir Odoriko makes a convenient stop right at Shinagawa on its way out of Tokyo. The JR station makes things super easy for travelers—there are bright, impossible-to-miss Saphir Odoriko signs painted on the platform floors and wrapped around the structural pillars 🧭.

A quick heads-up for my photo-loving friends: Japanese trains run with unbelievable precision! The train stops at Shinagawa for only a couple of minutes, so if you want that iconic photo in front of the sleek train exterior, you need to be fast! Have your camera ready, strike a pose, snap, and hop on board before the doors slide shut 📸.

When the train pulled up to the platform, I was head over heels. The metallic navy body looks even richer in person than it does in photos. It is painted this deep, sophisticated sapphire shade that literally gleams under the morning sunshine like a polished jewel 💎.

How to Book Saphir Odoriko Tickets

The Saphir Odoriko is a 100% reserved-seat express train (no unreserved general admission allowed!), which means you MUST secure your seat in advance. Here is everything you need to know about locking down your ticket before your trip!

 1. Booking Online via JR-EAST Train Reservation (Eki-net)

This is hands-down the best official method for international travelers, and it is the exact route I took. You can organize your tickets long before you step on a plane!

Set Your Alarm for Ticket Release Day: Seats go live exactly 1 month before your travel date at 10:00 AM Japan Standard Time (JST). For travelers booking from North America, that means tickets drop the evening before! For example, 10:00 AM JST corresponds to 9:00 PM Eastern Time / 6:00 PM Pacific Time the night before. Put a reminder on your calendar because Car 1 and ocean-side seats vanish in literal minutes ⏰!

 Step-by-Step Eki-net Booking Walkthrough:

Head to the official JR-EAST Train Reservation website and create an account. Click “Purchase Tickets” (unless you are linking a JR Pass).

Enter your departure station (e.g., Tokyo or Shinagawa) and destination (e.g., Ito or Izukyu-Shimoda).

Look carefully through the train options and select the one labeled “Saphir-Odoriko”. (Make sure it says Saphir! Standard Odoriko trains are nice, but they do not have the luxury skylights or high-end aesthetic!).

Click “Select from Seat Map” to pick your exact seats. Pro Tip: If you want front-row seats to the Pacific Ocean, aim for Seat A on the right side of the train heading south! When I checked seat availability a month ahead, there was literally only one single seat left in that row—people do NOT mess around when it comes to ocean views! 🔥

Enter your credit card details and confirm your purchase.

The Credit Card Glitch & How to Fix It 💳:

When I tried to check out on Eki-net, my primary credit card got instantly declined! I tried my Visa, my Mastercard, and even a JCB card—denied, denied, denied. I was panicking thinking all the remaining seats would disappear.

Here is the secret hack: Eki-net frequently runs overnight security maintenance or triggers foreign credit card fraud blocks during US daytime hours (which is middle-of-the-night in Tokyo). The next morning, during regular Japanese business hours, I tried the exact same card again and it went through in seconds! So if your credit card gets rejected at night, do not panic. Wait until daytime in Japan and try again.

Ticket Pickup Instructions: Once your payment goes through, you will receive an email with a QR code. When you arrive in Japan, scan your QR code at any major JR East Travel Service Center ticket window or a Multilingual Ticket Vending Machine to print your physical paper tickets.

Understanding Your Tickets: You will receive two paper tickets per person: a Basic Fare Ticket and a Limited Express / Green Car Ticket. When passing through the ticket gates at the station, stack both tickets together and insert them into the slot at the same time! Keep them handy on the train because the conductor will check both.

Ticket Prices: A Standard Green Car ticket from Shinagawa to Ito costs approximately 7,170 JPY (~$45–$50 USD) for adults and 4,980 JPY (~$32 USD) for kids. Given the luxury experience and views, this is an absolute steal compared to European scenic rail lines!

 2. Booking at Japanese Train Stations

If you prefer to wing it after landing in Japan, you can visit any JR “Midori-no-Madoguchi” (Green Window ticket office) or use the touchscreen machines at the station. However, because Saphir Odoriko is wildly popular among domestic travelers, seats—especially window spots—are almost always sold out days or weeks in advance. I wouldn’t risk waiting!

 3. The Hassle-Free Option: Klook

If navigating foreign railway websites or dealing with credit card security glitches sounds like a headache, you can skip the stress entirely by booking through a trusted travel platform.

(Quick reminder: Double-check that your selected train route clearly says “Saphir-Odoriko” during checkout so you get the full luxury experience!)

Train Breakdown: What’s Inside Every Car?

The Saphir Odoriko was custom-designed by Ken Okuyama (the legendary industrial designer behind Ferrari models!), so every single car feels like a boutique hotel lounge.

Car 1 (Premium Green Car): The ultimate VIP tier. Features 20 massive, power-reclining plush leather seats in a 1+1 configuration that can rotate towards the panoramic windows.

Car 2 & 3 (Private Green Cabins): Cozy 4-person and 6-person private dining-style rooms. Ideal for families or groups of friends who want their own private sanctuary!

Car 4 (Cafeteria / Noodle Bar): A stunning open-kitchen dining car where you can order hot ramen, local craft beer, and sweets while watching the coast roll by ☕.

Cars 5 to 8 (Standard Green Cars): Spacious 2+1 seating with panoramic skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows. This is where we sat (Car 7), and it was fabulous!

Inside the Standard Green Car: Our Real Experience

Walking into Car 7, the first thing that hits you is how bright, open, and airy everything feels! The arched ceiling features continuous glass skylights running down both sides of the train, flooding the entire cabin with warm, natural sunlight 🌿.

The interior decor is sleek and modern, featuring rich navy seats, warm wood-paneled flooring, and elegant brass accents.

360-Degree Swivel Seats: Because we booked last minute, my partner and I couldn’t get seats right next to each other. But here is the coolest feature: the seats swivel a full 360 degrees! With a quick step on the foot pedal at the base, we spun our seats around to face each other, creating our own adorable mini face-to-face lounge 💖.

Thoughtful Amenities: Each seat comes equipped with a fold-out tray table (perfect for bento boxes and iced matcha lattes!), an adjustable footrest, coat hooks, and dedicated USB charging ports so your phone never dies while filming.

Huge Legroom & Storage: You could practically do yoga in front of your seat—the legroom is massive! Plus, the overhead racks and end-of-car luggage compartments have plenty of space for large international suitcases, so you never feel cramped.

The Views: Even though we weren’t in the A-row right next to the water, the oversized side windows and glass ceiling mean you get an unobstructed, sweeping view of the sparkling Pacific Ocean and rolling green hills as you zip down the coast 🌊.

The ride from Shinagawa to Ito Station takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The time flew by because we were completely hypnotized by the coastal scenery! Before we knew it, we arrived at Ito Station, feeling relaxed and ready to check into our traditional hot spring onsen resort.

🌟Is the Saphir Odoriko Worth the Splurge?

100% yes! Even if you miss out on the elusive Car 1 Premium seats like we did, the Standard Green Car delivers a world-class, luxury experience that feels far more high-end than its ~$50 price tag. Floating along the Japanese coastline under bright sunlit skies with a cold beverage in hand is an unforgettable travel memory.

If you are planning a trip to Tokyo, do yourself a favor and schedule a weekend getaway to the Izu Peninsula on this gorgeous train. You will love every second of it!
