Hello everyone~ It’s Hattie 💛 Early August, my son and I finally checked off a major bucket-list destination in Japan that I’ve been eyeing on my travel feeds for forever: Mount Omuro (大室山) in the gorgeous Izu Peninsula!
Before heading out, I spent countless late nights doom-scrolling travel blogs and TikTok trying to figure out where to take a day trip from Tokyo in the heat of summer. I needed somewhere aesthetically pleasing, family-friendly, and actually worth the sweat! After mapping everything out, Mt. Omuro totally won my heart. It’s super accessible from Tokyo, easily pairable with the famous Atami fireworks or Shizuoka, and the travel logistics are shockingly smooth.
The main reason I was so obsessed with coming here? This extinct volcano turns into a giant, velvety matcha pudding for a few months every single year! As someone who literally cannot resist anything labeled “limited edition,” I knew I had to see this vibrant green mountain in person. So, despite the scorching August heat and my notoriously low tolerance for high humidity, we packed our bags and headed out to meet this giant matcha dessert face-to-face! 🍮🍵
Now, everyone on the internet promises that on a clear day, you can get a breathtaking panoramic view of Mount Fuji from the summit. Spoiler alert: Fuji-san was totally playing hide-and-seek behind the thick summer haze during our visit! Plus, to be totally fair, during peak summer, all that iconic white snow melts away anyway, leaving Fuji looking a little bare (okay fine, I’m totally making excuses to feel better about missing it 😆). No worries though! We’ll just have to plan a winter trip back specifically for Mount Fuji. But honestly? Mt. Omuro stole the show regardless—it is just ridiculously cute and photogenic!

Before you book your flights, you definitely want to know about Mount Omuro’s “seasonal outfits”! This mountain completely changes its look depending on when you visit, so you can pick the vibe that fits your aesthetic:

Peak aesthetic season! The entire dormant volcano is covered in bright, velvety green grass, making it look exactly like a giant matcha pudding (this was when we visited!). I 10/10 recommend this season if you love vibrant, dreamy summer photos!

As autumn rolls in, the green grass dries into dramatic, shimmering golden pampas grass. The crisp winter air during these months gives you the highest mathematical chance of seeing a snow-capped Mount Fuji in the background!

Right after the famous annual Yamayaki (Mountain Burning Festival), where locals set fire to the entire mountain to clear out old grass for new spring growth. The mountain turns a dramatic jet-black—a super unique, moody, and powerful sight that draws huge crowds!
🚌 How to Reach the Matcha Mountain: Transit & Chairlift Guide
If you’re staying in Tokyo, reaching Mount Omuro is surprisingly easy and straightforward! Here is the exact breakdown of how to get there without getting lost:
Public Transit Breakdown
1. Take a JR Train from Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station down to either Ito Station or Izu-Kogen Station.
2. Step outside the station and hop directly onto the Tokai Bus bound for Mount Omuro (Omuro-yama). The bus drops you off right at the base of the chairlift! The ride through the Izu countryside is so relaxing and charming.

To protect the delicate grassy slopes, walking up Mount Omuro on foot is strictly forbidden. The only way to reach the summit is by taking the open-air double chairlift!

I’m going to be honest with you guys—summer crowds in Japan are no joke! But as a self-proclaimed organized travel queen, I was mentally prepared.
When our bus pulled up, the line for the chairlift was already wrapping around the building. Instead of melting in line, we pivoted immediately! We walked right across the street to the famous Izu Shaboten Zoo (aka Capybara Paradise) first. We spent a couple of hours feeding capybaras, exploring giant cacti greenhouses, and taking cute photos. By the time we strolled back to the chairlift around 1:00 PM, the line had dropped down to a manageable 40-minute wait.

There is ABSOLUTELY ZERO SHADE at the summit of Mount Omuro! A large portion of the queue at the bottom is also completely exposed to the sun. Please, do yourself a favor and pack an anti-UV sun umbrella, slather on waterproof SPF like your life depends on it (I still managed to get a minor sunburn 😭), and bring a large insulated water bottle. Heatstroke will ruin your vibe real quick, so hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

The Chairlift Ride
The chairlift is a ski-resort-style double chairlift where your legs dangle right over the grassy hill. It takes about 10 minutes to gently sway your way up to the top. The ride is super smooth and peaceful (unless the person sitting next to you starts wiggling on purpose 🙃). The light breeze feels amazing, though the sun is definitely blazing down on you. Have your camera ready because capturing the retro chairlift against the green slopes makes for the cutest travel clips!
The Crater Bowl Walk
When you step off the lift, you’re greeted by a massive, bowl-shaped dormant volcanic crater! There is a paved 1-kilometer trail that loops entirely around the crater rim. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to walk the whole loop, with gentle inclines and zero stairs. The best part? You get a full 360-degree unobstructed panorama of the Pacific Ocean, Sagami Bay, and the coastal mountains!

As a proud tourist, taking a photo with the giant “OMURO” stone letters right near the lift station is non-negotiable! It’s easy, iconic, and proves you made it to the top! ✌️
2. The Ocean Telescope Overlook:
Even though Fuji was hiding in the clouds, looking out over the endless blue ocean and the distant Izu Seven Islands was breathtaking. I managed to capture a candid portrait of my son here that turned out to be one of my favorite photos of the entire trip 🥺.
3. The Wooden Railing Trail:
The classic shot everyone saves on Pinterest! Frame yourself walking alongside the rustic wooden fence with the sweeping curves of the green crater bowl behind you.
💡 Photography Secret: If you want a photo showing the entire outside shape of the matcha mountain (rather than standing inside the crater), you actually need to go to neighboring Mount Komuro to shoot Mt. Omuro from afar!
(Between us, picking “3 spots” is just for blog structure 😆—in reality, EVERY SINGLE INCH of this loop is ridiculously photogenic. Because the landscape is so vast, it’s super easy to angle your camera so other tourists look tiny in the background, making it look like you stumbled upon a secret European meadow!)
👗 Outfit Reality Check: Dealing with the Mountain Wind
The crater bowl at the top is surprisingly deep, and honestly, why does Japan manage to make even a volcano look so adorable?! Down inside the bowl, there’s even a small red Shinto shrine arch (Sengen Shrine) popping out against the green grass.
However, let’s talk practical outfit advice! Aside from the heat, the wind on top of Mount Omuro is INSANE!
A lot of girls (myself included! 🙋♀️) love wearing a flowy white dress because white looks SO dreamily aesthetic against the rich matcha green backdrop. But listen to me carefully, babes: WEAR SAFETY SHORTS UNDERNEATH! Also, have a game plan for your hair (like a chic claw clip or tie), because the wind will give you an unprompted Marilyn Monroe moment and blow your dress sky-high if you aren’t paying attention! 🤣
When you get tired of battling the elements, there’s a small covered visitor center at the summit station. Walking inside, sitting in the shade, and sipping an ice-cold Coca-Cola after completing the loop felt like pure luxury 😆!
They also sell matcha soft-serve ice cream and grilled dango skewers if you need a quick snack boost.
Going down on the chairlift was much faster—we only waited about 10 minutes in line. The open view looking down toward the ocean with the wind in your hair is so peaceful and therapeutic. Just remember to follow the staff’s instructions and stand up only when they tell you to so everyone stays safe!
🛍️ Souvenir Reality Check: Where to Spend Your Money
There is a small gift shop at the base chairlift station selling Mt. Omuro-themed trinkets. If you specifically want a mountain-shaped magnet or cookie box, take a quick look.
BUT if you want my honest opinion? The souvenir shop at the mountain base is pretty small and underwhelming. Do not waste your main shopping budget here! Instead, save your cash for Izu Shaboten Zoo right across the street. Their gift shops are an absolute 10/10—packed with hilarious capybara plushies, cactus cosmetics, themed snacks, and adorable stationeries that will make you want to buy everything!
🦛 Bonus Combo: Don’t Miss Izu Shaboten Zoo!
Literally a 2-minute walk across the street from the chairlift entrance lies Izu Shaboten Zoo.
This place is an absolute dream for animal lovers! In the winter, you can watch capybaras soaking in hot yuzu baths, and in the summer, you can pet them and hand-feed them fresh grass! The zoo also features massive pyramid greenhouses filled with rare cacti from around the world. Pairing the zoo in the morning with Mt. Omuro in the afternoon is hands-down the ultimate Izu day trip combo!

Let’s weigh the pros and cons:
❌ The Cons: It gets extremely hot, there are queues during peak hours, and you have a 90% chance of missing the Mount Fuji view due to summer haze.
⭕ The Pros: The grass is at its absolute GREENEST and most photogenic state of the year!
Is that only one pro? Maybe 😆… BUT THAT ONE PRO IS 100% WORTH IT!
I am a hot-weather hater who usually refuses to step foot outdoors during summer days. But seeing how much my son loved this trip made it so worth it. He was obsessed with the open-air chairlift, thought the giant pudding mountain was the coolest thing ever, and didn’t complain about the heat even once!
If you love taking gorgeous travel photos and want to see a unique landscape you can’t find anywhere else in the world, you will not regret coming here.
