Want to See Japan’s Best Beach Fireworks? 🎇 Your Ultimate Atami Hanabi Day Trip Guide! 🌊
Your ultimate guide to chasing the dreamiest coastal fireworks, aesthetic matcha puddings, and historic vibes in Atami! 💖🌊
Hello everyone~It’s Hattie here💛 Today, I am beyond excited to take you along on my absolute favorite adventure from my recent Japan trip: the legendary Atami Maritime Fireworks Festival (Atami Hanabi)! 🎇 If you’ve been scrolling through social media dreaming about those breathtaking fireworks bursting over the dark ocean, trust me—seeing it in person is a total core memory unlocked.
When we were mapping out our epic Japan itinerary, we did so much homework to align our dates with this specific festival. Our final route was pure genius, if I do say so myself: Tokyo ➡️ Izu ➡️ Atami ➡️ Kamakura ➡️ Airport.
The biggest perk? Zero backtracking! We literally traveled in one perfect, seamless straight line. The day before arriving in Atami, we were living our best lives at a cozy hot spring resort in Izu. Being the budget-savvy queens that we are, we milked that luxury hotel until the absolute last second of check-out time. Hey, we paid for those amenities, and we were going to enjoy every single cent! 💸😉
🗺️ 12:00 PM – Arriving at Atami Station: Meeting the Cutest Train Ever!

We hopped on the train from Ito to Atami around 11:00 AM, and the travel gods smiled upon us! We randomly got to ride the super-exclusive, limited-edition Kinme-Dai (Splendid Alfonsino) Train! 🐟 Let me tell you, this train is bright red, utterly adorable, and high-key aesthetic.
However, a quick reality check for my fellow aesthetic-chasers: the famous ocean-facing panoramic seats (which give total Spirited Away train vibes) are incredibly popular. The train was packed with tourists all playing a subtle game of musical chairs to get that perfect, empty-row Instagram shot. Spoilers: it’s nearly impossible. In the end, my photos were less “Spirited Away anime dream” and more “Spirited Away… featuring fifty other tourists.” 😂
🏨 First Stop – Checking into Our Budget-Friendly Bestie: Toyoko INN

After surviving the train photoshoot struggle, priority number one was dumping our heavy bags. For this trip, we stayed at our favorite wallet-friendly savior—Toyoko INN Atami Ekimae.
Location-wise? A total 10 out of 10! It’s a literal 5-minute walk from both the bustling shopping streets and Atami Station. The rooms are insanely affordable, sparkling clean, and super comfortable.
Here is a major pro-tip (grab your red glitter pens and write this down! 📝): Room rates in Atami on fireworks days spike like crazy, and rooms sell out months in advance. If you want to experience the magic without sleeping on a park bench, book your room the second you confirm your travel dates!

🏖️ 2:00 PM – Claiming Our Kingdom on the Beach

Once our hands were free, we headed down to the beach around 2:00 PM to secure a prime fireworks-viewing spot. When it comes to Japanese festivals, location is everything!
But oh my gosh, nobody warned us about the coastal winds! The second we unfolded the mat, it almost took flight like a magic carpet. Pro-tip: immediately hunt for heavy rocks to anchor down the corners, or just sacrifice your heaviest backpacks to hold the fort. 🎒
We saw some genius locals who brought actual pop-up beach tents. Looking at them under the scorching summer sun, I realized they were living in 3026 while we were in 2026. A little shade tent is an absolute lifesaver if you’re waiting out there in the afternoon! ☀️
We chose Atami Sun Beach as our home base. Since we attended the festival in early August, the crowd was definitely there, but because the beach is so massive, it didn’t feel suffocating. When we walked back around 6:00 PM, there were still people finding decent spots. So don’t panic!
🍵 Afternoon Treat – Matcha Mt. Fuji Pudding at Atami Aobasha

Walking around in the Japanese summer heat will definitely drain your battery. Naturally, the only cure is aesthetic iced treats! We melted our way over to the famous viral cafe, Atami Aobasha (青葉舎).

Their signature item is a matcha pudding shaped exactly like a mini Mt. Fuji! 🗻 When you hold it, the jelly has the most therapeutic, satisfying jiggle. You have to shoot a Live photo or a TikTok video of the jiggle—it’s mandatory for the culture. Not only is it cute, but the matcha flavor is incredibly rich, velvety, and not overly sweet.

We also grabbed a Matcha Latte, where you can customize your toppings. The only tiny downside? The shop is microscopic. It’s mostly a standing-room-only situation, and because everything is made fresh to order, you’ll need a little patience. But for a dessert this cute that instantly cools you down? Totally worth the wait! ✨
🏰 Stepping Into an Anime: The Historic Kiunkaku Villa

With our matcha cravings satisfied, we took a leisurely stroll to a nearby historic gem—Kiunkaku (起雲閣). The moment I saw pictures of this place online during my trip planning, I clicked “save” so fast!
Kiunkaku was originally a lavish villa built by a wealthy businessman in 1919, and later became a famous ryokan (inn) that hosted legendary Japanese authors. What blew me away was its stunning “East-Meets-West” architectural style. You’ll be walking through a traditional tatami room with sliding paper doors, and then you turn a corner and suddenly you’re in a Roman-style bathhouse with stained-glass windows and marble floors! 🛁✨ It feels like stepping straight into a historical anime. It’s peaceful, full of culture, and highly photogenic.
🛍️ Street Food Heaven at Atami Station Shopping Street
Before the big show started, we headed back toward the Atami Station shopping streets (Nakamise and Heiwa Dori) for some essential street food fuel.
Time for some real, raw advice from Hattie: Please get here before 5:00 PM! 🚨 Many of the most popular food stalls will ruthlessly hang up a “SOLD OUT” sign by late afternoon, leaving you staring at the storefront crying tears of pure hunger.
Here are two spots we tried and absolutely fell in love with:
Atami Butter An:

Okay, listen. I am usually not a crazy bread person, but their red bean butter manju (bread) altered my brain chemistry. The pastry crust is slightly crisp, the red bean paste is perfectly sweet, and that rich, salty butter melts right into it. Sweet, salty, and round—just like me after this trip. 🧈🤤
Atami Yogurt Factory:

A cute shop specializing in artisanal fermented yogurt drinks. This was the ultimate refresher! It’s thick, creamy, tangy, and makes you feel like you’re doing something nice for your gut health after eating carbs all day.
A Quick Moment of Silence for My Regret List… 😢Maison de Parfait Jussen—Toami

There was one place I desperately wanted to visit called Maison de Parfait Jussen-Toami. It’s a gorgeous parfait buffet place I saved months ago. We were naive and thought we could just walk in. We put our names down at 12:00 PM, and we didn’t get a text that our table was ready until 5:00 PM! Don’t be like us. Book your reservations online weeks in advance!
After stuffing ourselves with treats, we ran back to Toyoko INN to take a quick shower, freshen up, change into our cute swimwear, and get ready for the main event! 👙
🎆 The Main Event – The Breathtaking Atami Maritime Fireworks Festival

By 6:30 PM, we grabbed some snacks and iced drinks from a nearby FamilyMart and made our way back to our secured spot on Atami Sun Beach. The sky was turning a beautiful twilight pink, the coastal breeze was cooling down, and we dipped our feet in the refreshing ocean while counting down the minutes.
This was my very first time experiencing an authentic Japanese Hanabi festival, and oh my goodness, when that first massive firework exploded and illuminated the entire ocean, I got full-body goosebumps! 🥹
Because the fireworks are launched right off the water in a curved bay, the topography creates this natural amphitheater effect. The sound doesn’t just hit your ears; the booming echo vibrates right through your chest! For a solid, non-stop show, the sky was painted in the most vivid neon colors. Hearing tens of thousands of people collectively gasp and whisper “Sugoi~” (Amazing!) in unison was pure romance. 💖
The Reality of the Aftermath… 🏃♀️💨

When the final spark faded, reality hit. The exodus of people can only be described as a literal sea of humanity. If you are traveling with friends or little ones, hold onto their hands like your life depends on it, because you will get separated in two seconds.
We even witnessed a hilarious moment where a completely wasted Japanese salaryman was just sprawled out on the sidewalk like a starfish while the local police politely tried to wake him up. Classic. 😭
But honestly, major props to Japan, because even with thousands of people trying to leave at once, everyone queued up beautifully and walked in an incredibly orderly fashion.
Watching the massive, terrifying snake-like queue wrapping around Atami Station with people trying to catch the last Shinkansen back to Tokyo, I felt like an absolute genius. We just casually bypassed the train station chaos, walked a breezy 5 minutes back to our hotel room, and collapsed into our cozy bed. Booking that night in Atami was the best decision of the whole trip! 🙌
🌟 Hattie’s Final Travel Truths & Tips
Atami has my whole heart. Between the mouthwatering desserts, the gorgeous retro architecture, and that world-class maritime fireworks show, it is a bucket-list destination you need to experience at least once!
Before you pack your bags, keep these final three things in mind:
1 Atami is basically one giant hill! ⛰️ Google Maps might look like a short, flat 5-minute walk, but it completely hides the fact that you will be climbing steep slopes or endless flights of stairs. It’s a workout, especially when the summer heat is draining your energy! Wear comfortable shoes, babe.
2 The summer sun is no joke. Bring your heavy-duty sunscreen, a cute bucket hat, and sunglasses. Keep chugging water from those vending machines so you don’t get heatstroke!
3 Book early! I cannot stress this enough. The fireworks festival turns this sleepy beach town into the most popular place in Japan for a night. Plan ahead!
I hope this ultimate guide helps you plan your dream getaway to Atami! Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever been to a Japanese fireworks show, and I’ll see you in the next adventure! 👋💛
