Is This Tokyo’s Best Hidden Gem? 5 Reasons Why Ghibli Fans Need Corn Barley! 🍖✨
A dream come true for Ghibli lovers—real-life anime food in the heart of Kichijoji! 🌸
Hello everyone~ It’s Hattie💛 If you’re anything like me, your childhood (and let’s be real, your adulthood) was defined by the cozy, shimmering, and suspiciously delicious-looking food in Studio Ghibli movies. Why does drawn food look so much better than real food?! 😭

Well, I have some news that might actually heal your inner child. During my last trip to Tokyo, I found a spot that literally serves the “Miyazaki Dream Menu.” We’re talking about Corn Barley in Kichijoji.
Honestly? While everyone is fighting for tickets to the Ghibli Museum (which is amazing, don’t get me wrong), this restaurant felt like a “secret club” for true fans. It’s cozy, quirky, and filled with more collectibles than my luggage could ever handle. Let’s dive into the magic! ✨
The Vibe: Stepping Into a Collector’s Dream 🧸

Located just a 5-minute walk from Kichijoji Station, Corn Barley isn’t a flashy, corporate theme cafe. It’s located on the second floor of a modest building (right above a FamilyMart—classic Japan!), and the moment you step inside, the “Real World” just… disappears.

The owner is a hardcore Ghibli devotee. The walls are lined with rare figurines, vintage posters, and plushies. It feels like you’ve been invited into a very cool, very organized Ghibli museum that also happens to serve steak.

Hattie’s Pro-Tip: Each table usually has a “Dining Companion.” We sat with one of those creepy-but-cute green heads from Spirited Away. He didn’t talk much, but he was great at holding my purse. 💁♀️
The Taste Test: The “Tribute Course” Experience 🍴

To get the full experience, you have to pre-order the Ghibli Tribute Course. This isn’t just food; it’s a multi-act performance. The coolest part? Every time a new dish arrives, the staff places a tiny, matching figurine on your table to “watch” you eat. It is peak ritual, and my heart couldn’t take the cuteness! 🥺
1. Musashino Forest Salad (The Totoro Starter) 🍃

Inspired by My Neighbor Totoro, this salad is a lush pile of greens that looks exactly like the forest where Mei gets lost. It’s fresh, crisp, and served with a tiny Totoro watching over the sprouts. A perfect “I’m eating healthy before the carbs hit” moment.
2. Coal Miner’s Soup (Pazu’s Meatball Soup) 🥣

Laputa: Castle in the Sky fans, this one is for you! Remember Pazu buying that hot soup in the middle of the night? This soup is incredibly hearty. The meatballs are massive and juicy, and the broth is pure comfort. I spent so much time taking photos of the Pazu figurine next to the bowl that I almost let it get cold—don’t be like me, eat it while it’s steaming! 💨
3. Sky Pirate Roast Pork (The “Dola Gang” Special) 🍖

This was the absolute MVP. It’s a thick, rustic slab of roast pork inspired by the air pirates’ feast. It even comes with a giant knife stuck right in it! 🏴Sadly, my human teeth aren’t as strong as a cartoon pirate’s, so I had to use the knife. It’s savory, tender, and comes with three different dipping sauces to keep things interesting. 10/10 would join a pirate crew for this.
4. Chicken and Pumpkin Pie (Kiki’s Delivery Service) 🎃

“I hate this pie,” said the ungrateful granddaughter in the movie. Well, she was wrong! This pumpkin pie is flaky, golden, and filled with a creamy, sweet savory filling. It’s basically a hug in pastry form. Yes, the calories are probably astronomical, but it’s Ghibli-themed, so I’m pretty sure they don’t count? 🤷♀️✨
5. Soot Sprite Dessert (The Final Magic) 🌚

The finale is a Truffle Chocolate and Seasonal Ice Cream set, styled after the Soot Sprites (Susuwatari) from Spirited Away and Totoro. It’s almost too cute to eat. Almost. The chocolate was rich, and when paired with the Totoro figurines, it was the perfect “Instagrammable” ending to the meal.
The “Wild Card”: The Roasted Newt Cookie 🦎

If you want to bring back a souvenir that will make your friends do a double-take, you have to buy the Roasted Newt Cookie.
Yes, it looks exactly like the “delicacy” the frog spirits go crazy for in Spirited Away. It’s actually just a crunchy, slightly sweet biscuit, but the shape is 100% lizard. At 600 yen, it’s the ultimate “IYKYK” gift for Ghibli fans.
How to Hack Your Visit (USA Traveler Edition) ✈️
Going to Japan from the States is a long haul, so don’t leave your meals to chance!
• Book in Advance:
This is non-negotiable. If you want the Tribute Course, you must reserve online. I used AutoReserve, which has an English interface and makes it super easy.
• The “King” Seat:

There is a specific booth with a giant Totoro plushie sitting in the corner. If you’re lucky, you might get to sit there! 👑
• The Perfect Day Trip:

Don’t just go to the restaurant. Make it a whole Miyazaki day!
1. Morning: Visit the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka (Book these tickets months in advance!).
2. Afternoon: Take the bus/walk to Kichijoji and have your 3:00 PM “Late Lunch” at Corn Barley.
3. Evening: Explore Inokashira Park or shop for vintage clothes in Kichijoji.

🌟Hattie’s Final Thoughts

This experience was a total “dream come true” moment. As someone whose cooking skills are basically nonexistent, being able to eat food that looks like it was plucked out of a movie was magical. Corn Barley isn’t just a gimmick; the food is actually delicious, and the atmosphere is so respectful to the source material.
It’s whimsical, it’s cozy, and it’s a little bit weird—just like a Miyazaki movie. 🎥💛 Next time you’re in Tokyo, make sure this spot is at the top of your list! ✈️🌸
