Godaimé Hanayama Udon Ginza: Best Tokyo Udon? 🍜

Is the viral Godaimé Hanayama Udon worth the wait? My full review!

Hello everyone~ it’s Hattie💛 Today, I am beyond excited to finally share a Tokyo dining experience that I have been absolutely dying to check off my bucket list. If you’ve ever planned a trip to Japan, you know the food scene is out of this world, but there is one specific spot that has been living in my head rent-free.

I’m talking about Godaimé Hanayama Udon in Ginza. Let me tell you, getting my hands on these viral noodles was a journey. I’ve visited Ginza multiple times on past trips, enthusiastically strutting up to the restaurant only to be ruthlessly greeted by a “Sold Out for the Day” sign slapped on the door. Talk about heartbreak! 💔 When you travel all the way from the world, missing out on a legendary meal is deeply devastating. It turns out, this place is so wildly popular and so wonderfully casual about their inventory that if you don’t plan ahead, you simply aren’t eating.

But not this time! On my latest Tokyo trip, I channeled my inner food warrior. I was determined. I packed my patience, arrived early, and finally—finally—the udon gods smiled upon me!

But this time? I came prepared and finally got to taste this legendary, highly coveted, internet-breaking bowl of noodles. And let me tell you, it was a spiritual experience! 🎉

🏆 Why Godaime Hanayama Udon is a Tokyo Must-Eat

If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok or Instagram for your Japan travel prep, you’ve definitely seen this place. Whenever you walk past their gorgeous wooden storefront, there is always a crowd. But what exactly makes Godaime Hanayama Udon so incredibly famous, and why are locals and tourists alike so willing to wait?

First off, this isn’t just a trendy viral spot—it’s a deeply respected establishment with serious history. Founded all the way back in 1894 (the 27th year of the Meiji era!) in Gunma Prefecture, this century-old restaurant brings generations of craftsmanship to the table.

But their ultimate claim to fame? They dominated the prestigious Udon Tenkaichi Ketteisen (Japan’s National Udon Championship), taking home the first-place trophy for three consecutive years! 🥇 That title alone instantly secures its spot on any “Best Udon in Tokyo” list.

Beyond the gold medals, they are universally loved for their Oni Himokawa—an insanely wide, flat udon noodle that looks almost like a delicate ribbon of dough. Combine that with their flawless, welcoming Japanese omotenashi (hospitality), and your entire dining experience is elevated to the next level. 🥰 You really feel like an honored guest from the moment you step through the door!

🚇 Godaime Hanayama Udon Ginza Location & Queue Hacks

When you’re trying to snag a table at one of the most popular Ginza restaurants, going in blind is a rookie mistake. Your time in Tokyo is precious, so understanding the location and how the waitlist works is crucial!

Getting There:

This beautiful restaurant is tucked away in the ultra-chic, high-end shopping district of Ginza. It’s super accessible!

Address: 3 Chome-14-13 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0061, Japan

Subway Routes: Just hop on the Tokyo Metro and get off at Ginza Station, Higashi-Ginza Station, or Tsukiji Station. From any of these, it’s just a breezy few minutes’ walk.

Hattie’s Itinerary Tip: Because of the amazing location, it is so easy to sandwich this meal between exploring the famous Kabukiza Theater or dropping some cash at the nearby designer boutiques and massive department stores. 🛍️🚶‍♀️

The 2.5-Hour Wait Myth & The Golden Queue Hack:

If you read online reviews, you might see horror stories of people waiting 2.5 hours for a bowl of noodles. Honestly, as much as I love food, I draw the line at standing on the pavement for that long. But here is the secret: you don’t actually have to stand in line!

During our visit, we targeted the dinner service. To avoid my past heartbreaks of everything selling out, we showed up to the storefront between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM. Right at 5:00 PM, they bring out an iPad kiosk at the door where you officially “pull your ticket” to get on the waitlist.

💡 The Ultimate Strategy: Arrive about 10–15 minutes before they put the iPad out. Tap in your party size, grab your virtual queue ticket, and walk away! You do not need to stand in the cold or the heat. We took our ticket, happily strolled around the neon-lit streets of Ginza, shopped for some Japanese skincare, and simply walked back when our number was getting close.

When you do the math, our actual time spent standing in front of the restaurant was less than 30 minutes! For a world-famous championship restaurant, that is an absolute steal of your time.

(Psst… if you really, truly cannot fit the wait into your schedule, they do have another Tokyo branch in Nihonbashi that sometimes has slightly lighter crowds, though it’s just as delicious!)

🦊 Godaime Hanayama Udon Menu Review: The Viral Oni Himokawa

Walking into the restaurant, you’re immediately greeted by a warm, aesthetic wooden interior that feels instantly calming. Because we were borderline hangry and riding the high of finally securing a table, we fully embraced a “treat yourself” mentality and ordered a massive feast! 🥢

The Star of the Show: Hot Tanuki Udon (Oni Himokawa)

Oh. My. Gosh. When the server brought this to our table, I actually squealed. 😍 The presentation is everything! The udon is served in this gorgeous, custom-made ceramic bowl shaped like a round, chubby Tanuki (a Japanese raccoon dog).

Its little eyes stare up at you, and they even serve your tea in a matching mini Tanuki cup! 🦝 If you are looking for that perfect, aesthetic food shot for your Instagram or TikTok, this is the moment.

Inside the adorable bowl is a steaming hot portion of their famous Oni Himokawa Udon, beautifully topped with bamboo shoots, a slice of fish cake, and a pop of green veggies.

The moment of truth: grabbing the noodles with my chopsticks.

You guys, the sheer width of this udon is staggering. It genuinely looks like a silky, edible piece of fabric! Despite soaking in the hot broth, the texture was mind-blowing. It was incredibly bouncy, chewy, and perfectly al dente—not soggy in the slightest.

The hot broth was an elegant, crystal-clear dashi made from premium kelp and bonito. It had this soul-warming, umami-rich flavor that felt like a hug in a bowl 💛. They give you a cute little tray of condiments to adjust the flavor, but honestly? It was so masterfully balanced that I didn’t add a single thing.

❄️ Hot vs. Cold: Finding the Best Udon in Tokyo

Since I was traveling with my family, we strategically ordered different variations so we could taste-test everything. While I went with the hot Tanuki bowl, we also ordered the cold version of the exact same noodle: Ten-zaru Oni Himokawa (Cold dipping noodles served with Tempura).

The cold noodles arrive beautifully arranged on a traditional bamboo mat, giving off the most refreshing, elegant summer vibe.

So, which is better?

If we are judging purely on the noodle texture, the Cold Udon takes the crown. 👑 Because the noodles are shocked in ice water after boiling, the elasticity and “Q-texture” (that perfect, bouncy chew) is amplified tenfold. The mouthfeel is absolutely incredible when you dip that wide, glossy noodle into the chilled, rich soy-dashi tsuyu.

However, since I visited during the chilly Tokyo winter, my body was absolutely craving comfort food. The steaming hot broth of the warm udon just hit different. Drinking that delicate soup on a cold night gave me a level of happiness that I can’t even describe! Honestly, you can’t go wrong. If you are going in the summer, definitely get the cold ones. If you can’t decide, just order both! 😆

🍳 Our Side Dish Review: Ginza Restaurants Hidden Gems

Because we were practically ravenous by the time we sat down, we went all out and ordered some of their signature sides to accompany our noodles.

The Tempura Platter

The tempura batter was light, airy, and fried to a flawless golden crisp without being greasy. Alongside the classic, juicy fried shrimp, there was a total wild card that completely blew my mind: Fried Black Wood Ear Mushroom! 🍄

You rarely see wood ear mushrooms prepared as tempura, even in Japan! The contrast between the fragile, crispy batter on the outside and the distinct, crunchy snap of the mushroom on the inside was brilliant. I am still dreaming about it!🤤

Dashi-Rolled Tamagoyaki (Japanese Omelet)

You have to add the Dashimaki Tamago to your order! Their version of this classic egg dish is served sitting in a shallow pool of their championship bonito broth. The thick, fluffy layers of egg act like a sponge, soaking up all that savory, umami goodness. Every single bite is so ridiculously juicy and bursting with flavor. The portion is super generous, and it’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for both adults and kids.

🌟 Final Thoughts: Is Godaime Hanayama Udon Worth the Hype?

Time for the ultimate truth: Is this hyped-up Tokyo restaurant actually worth adding to your itinerary?

I’ll be completely honest with you—I am usually the person who actively avoids “viral queue restaurants.” Traveling in Japan is overwhelming enough, and there is so much incredible, queue-free food on every corner that waiting in line often feels like a waste of vacation time.

But for Godaime Hanayama Udon? It is an absolute, resounding YES from me! ✨

The biggest selling point is their brilliant ticketing system. Because I wasn’t forced to waste hours standing on the sidewalk, the “wait” felt practically non-existent. For less than 30 minutes of actual standing around, I got to experience a historic, award-winning bowl of noodles that completely lived up to the hype in both visual presentation and taste.

If you are an extremely impatient traveler who refuses to wait even five minutes for food, you might want to skip it. But if you don’t mind popping by to grab a ticket, doing some world-class Ginza shopping, and coming back for one of the most unique, photogenic, and delicious bowls of udon you will ever eat… you must go here!
