Top 5 Tsukiji Foods That AREN’T Raw Fish! 🦀 (Is It Still Worth Going?!)

Tsukiji Market Survival Guide: Best Souvenirs & Street Snacks You Can’t Miss! 🍵 🍡

Hello everyone~it’s Hattie💛 When you hear “Tsukiji,” your brain probably goes straight to rows of glistening bluefin tuna or those mountain-high seafood bowls (Kaisendon), right? Well, real talk: after visiting twice, I still haven’t found a seafood restaurant there that totally blew my mind. In fact, I was a tiny bit disappointed the first time 😭.

But wait! Don’t cross Tsukiji off your Tokyo bucket list just yet. My “failed” seafood mission led me to discover the real soul of the market: the incredible street snacks and the kind of souvenirs that actually make it home without smelling like a fish market. Today, I’m spilling the tea on what to eat and buy in Tsukiji when you’re all “sushied out.” Let’s dive in! 🌊

🦐 The Visual King: Senbei Crackers from Tsukiji Itadori

If you haven’t seen these on your Instagram feed yet, are you even on the internet?! 📸 These giant seafood crackers are the absolute “Main Character” of Tsukiji street food.

Seriously, people walk around holding these things like they’re carrying a priceless piece of art—mostly because they’re bigger than your actual face! It’s the “Maruyaki” style seafood cracker, and honestly, finding the shop can feel like a game of Zelda because Tsukiji’s alleys are a total maze.

The “cool factor” here is 10/10. The staff takes a whole fresh shrimp or octopus, places it on a high-heat press, and bam—it’s flattened into a crispy, salty sheet of deliciousness.

• Hattie’s Pro-Tip: If you want the best photos, go for the Shrimp or Crab. You can actually see the beautiful, marbled texture of the seafood pressed into the cracker.

• The Taste: It’s not just for the ‘gram! It’s super crunchy, and you get that authentic umami flavor without it tasting like “chemical” snack food.

My kids are obsessed. Every time we hit Tsukiji, it’s a non-negotiable stop. They have an easy-to-use vending machine for payment right by the stand, so just grab your ticket and wait for the magic to happen 🎫. (P.S. If you’re heading to Enoshima later, they have a famous shop there too!)

🍵 The Hojicha That Ruined My Life: Matcha Stand Maruni

Okay, I need a moment of silence for this shop because I am obsessed 🌿. Matcha Stand Maruni is this gorgeous, minimalist, industrial-chic spot that looks like it belongs in SoHo but is tucked away in the middle of a gritty fish market.

Before I found this place, I thought “Japan = Matcha.” End of story. But then I tried their Hojicha Latte (Roasted Green Tea) and my world was tilted on its axis 👑.

The roasted, smoky aroma is so sophisticated, and when it’s paired with creamy milk, it’s like a warm hug for your soul. Last summer, after my first sip, I went on a “Hojicha Hunt” across Japan, trying every cafe I could find. Guess what? Nothing compared to Maruni 🤏.

I actually flew back to Tsukiji this winter just for this drink. I even bought their expensive Hojicha powder to try and recreate it at home in Taiwan. I failed. 😭 I think the secret is in their technique—they whisk every single cup by hand with a traditional bamboo whisk (chasen).

Fair warning: Don’t go there. Because once you taste it, you’ll be haunted by it forever and no other latte will ever be good enough. You’ve been warned! 😆💖

🍙 The Insider Secret: Takashimaya Seaweed (No, Not the Department Store!)

If you love snacking on seaweed or have kids who live for onigiri, you have to stop at Takashimaya Seaweed Store. No, it’s not the fancy mall—it’s a legendary wholesale shop that supplies high-end sushi restaurants in Tokyo 🛒.

Here’s the tea: high-end sushi Nori can cost a fortune. But since this is a wholesale spot, they sell “Market Specials” or “Imperfection Packs” 💎. These are sheets of seaweed that might have a tiny tear or aren’t the “perfect” size for a Michelin-star chef, but the quality and crunch are 100% top-tier.

You won’t find these specific professional-grade packs in a touristy pharmacy in Shinjuku. My kids crushed these as snacks the moment we got home. The thickness and that “snap” you get when you bite into it? Chef’s kiss.

🐟 The “Lazy Girl” Kitchen Essential: Flying Fish Dashi

If you want to bring the taste of Japan back to your kitchen without actually having to cook, look for the Ago Ajidashi (Flying Fish Broth Packs).

Walking through the dry goods section is so fun, but keep an eye out for a super friendly guy (see my photo!) handing out tiny cups of hot soup. Taste it. I promise your eyes will go wide 😳. It’s so flavorful you’ll think he’s been boiling bones for 12 hours.

Nope! It’s just a tea-bag style dashi pack. You drop it in boiling water for three minutes, and you have a professional-grade base for ramen, miso soup, or hot pot. I stocked up like crazy on my last two trips. The vendor was so sweet—since we bought so much, he kept throwing in extra packs of seaweed like it was candy! 🎁

Look for the “Tsukiji Limited” labels—they make the cutest gifts for your foodie friends back home 🏮

✨ Hattie’s Final Thoughts: Take Memories (and Snacks) Home!

Even though I’m still on the hunt for that “life-changing” sushi bowl in Tsukiji, these street food finds and hidden shops made the trip totally worth it. Sometimes the best parts of travel are the things you weren’t looking for.

I need your help, though! 💬👇

Have you found a “Holy Grail” sushi spot in Tsukiji that I missed? Please drop the name in the comments! I need to redeem my seafood luck on my next trip!

Until next time, stay hungry! 💛✨
